I created this piece to memorialize our service men and women who have
given so much to our country over the years through many wars and much
sacrifice. It was difficult at times, definitely emotional, but a labor
of love and I hope it provides some comfort for the families of those
who have given so much.
Mary Dallas Gukich began her career 26 years ago making reproduction
porcelain dolls for her daughter. Her desire to create original designs
prompted her to begin her own sculpting and mold-making. She has
produced award winning original dolls, won multiple awards and been featured on the cover of doll magazines. She is most known for her porcelain creations. You can visit her other pieces of art at http://www.marydallas.com.
She is presently concentrating her work on the military. She has
always been in awe of the "warrior spirit" that permeates our armed
forces. Their dedication, commitment, and sacrifice, for the defense of
freedom and liberty, is humbling and inspiring. This first piece, "An
Angel Gets His Wings", symbolizes the ultimate sacrifice made by so many
to secure the freedoms we hold most dear...because, after all, freedom
isn't free.
Mary's connection to the military is strong, based on a father and two brothers served in the Marines, another brother and
her husband served in the Air Force in Vietnam and, currently, her son-in-law and
niece are serving in Operation IRAQI FREEDOM.
